Review: Procrastination haunts us all. Not just writers, but any type of creative individual. This fascinating nonfiction book dives deep into the reasons why we procrastinate and acknowledges everyone does it for different reasons. There's no one answer to change your habits. You have to look at the root at what drives you and what is holding you back.
The types of procrastinators are separated into 13 types, and you'll discover that people are more than one type. We are complicated creatures! The book contains a thorough survey through which you can discover your types. Each type is then laid out in its own chapter and discussed in detail with practical action plans to help overcome what's holding you back. There are several strategies offered, because, again, not every path is for you. I love that this book doesn't try to steer the reader into following a single strategy because it's what worked for the author. We each have our own journeys to break out of the web, and this book can help you customize yours.
As a writer, I've read a lot of nonfiction books over the years which promised to make me into a writing machine. The vast majority of them weren't helpful at all. They were merely books written about how the author succeeded. Escape the Writer's Web stands above the crowd. It guides you rather than tells you what to do. It helps you delve into your emotions and behaviors regarding procrastination and the reasons you create, and by identifying your procrastination types, you can design a workable action plan that suits you. Even better, it doesn't ask you to start big, it encourages you to start with the small things. Every little accomplishment should be celebrated in some way, even if it's just with a cookie. (Yes, a chocolate chip cookie is a reward for me!)
What I got out of this book is personal to me. I gave a lot of time and reflection to thinking about my procrastination types, how they relate to one another, and what I can do about it. I'm going to share with you my types and action plans next week. That way you can see how this book works to help you, because it's not only encouraging, it's immensely practical.
I can't remember the last time I've highly recommended a nonfiction book for writers. But this one, you need to pick it up.
