Review for Nona the Ninth (The Locked Tomb #3)

Blurb: Her city is under siege.

The zombies are coming back.

And all Nona wants is a birthday party.

In many ways, Nona is like other people. She lives with her family, has a job at her local school, and loves walks on the beach and meeting new dogs. But Nona's not like other people. Six months ago she woke up in a stranger's body, and she's afraid she might have to give it back.

The whole city is falling to pieces. A monstrous blue sphere hangs on the horizon, ready to tear the planet apart. Blood of Eden forces have surrounded the last Cohort facility and wait for the Emperor Undying to come calling. Their leaders want Nona to be the weapon that will save them from the Nine Houses. Nona would prefer to live an ordinary life with the people she loves, with Pyrrha and Camilla and Palamedes, but she also knows that nothing lasts forever.

And each night, Nona dreams of a woman with a skull-painted face...

Review: Nona can only remember back six months and the struggle she had regaining her simple faculties like speech. She lives in a city of refugees from other planets and every day there's shooting. Yet she wants normal, wants to be productive, wants to be loved. Every night she dreams of a strange man and woman doing even stranger things. When the city falls under siege by the undead, Nona wants only to save her friends. Death doesn't scare her. Yet there are worse things than death....

This is the thrilling third book in The Locked Tomb series, and it's my favorite one so far. The incredible world building of this new planet and what lies beyond now is enough alone to suck me in. Yet it is also the complex plot and fascinating characters that make this series phenomenal. We see more of the past in Nona's dreams, and we learn more about the Nine Houses and Blood of Eden. I especially enjoyed time with Pyrrha, Camilla, and Palamedes. Yet Nona's friends at school had their own draw, even though they were just teens. I find it difficult to describe this series to people because it isn't like anything else. It's speculative fiction with sci-fi and necromantic magic, politics, theology, mystery, and a layer of romance. It entangles me in the story and doesn't let go.
