Review for The Dark Realm (Feyland #1)

Blurb: WHEN A GAME…

Feyland is the most immersive computer game ever designed, and Jennet Carter is the first to play the prototype. But she doesn’t suspect the virtual world is close enough to touch — or that she’ll be battling for her life against the Dark Queen of the faeries.

TURNS REAL…

Tam Linn is the perfect hero — in-game. Too bad the rest of his life is seriously flawed. The last thing he needs is rich-girl Jennet prying into his secrets, insisting he’s the only one who can help her.

WINNING IS EVERYTHING…

Together, Jennet and Tam enter the Dark Realm of Feyland, only to discover that the entire human world is in danger. Pushed to the limit of their abilities, they must defeat the Dark Queen… before it’s too late.

Review: Jennet Carter is always excited to try out the new immersive games her father works on. When she enters Feyland, she's amazed at how real it is, until she realizes it is real and she loses her life essence to the Dark Queen of the faeries. She can't get back into the dark realm without a champion, and she finds the perfect knight in Tam Linn. He's skilled, brave, and has secrets of his own. Will they be able to survive the wilds of Feyland and save Jennet from the Dark Queen?

This is a wonderful start to the YA LitRPG series, Feyland. Feyland being the name of the totally immersive game which opens up to the real land of faeries. I love the idea that a portal can be opened between the realms in a digital way because it is much like a dream being in VR. There are all the traditional fae in roles that fit naturally into quest giving characters in a game. The whole novel is based on the ballad of Tam Lin, but you don't need to be familiar with it to enjoy the story. Tam has a harsh life with an ill family and living in the most frighteningly poor section of the city. Yet he's clever, responsible, and compassionate. Jennet is supposed to start as a rich mean girl, but she's a more keep-to-herself person. She isn't terribly likable at first, but she just wants to live. She picks Tam as her champion because he's a great gamer. Her intentions are selfish, but both she and Tam learn and grow together. I hope future books bring in the secondary characters even more, because I would love to learn more about the Bug, Thomas, Puck, and Marny.
