Review of Nothing But Blackened Teeth

Writer: christinerainswritchristinerainswrit

Blurb: A Heian-era mansion stands abandoned, its foundations resting on the bones of a bride and its walls packed with the remains of the girls sacrificed to keep her company.

It’s the perfect wedding venue for a group of thrill-seeking friends.

But a night of food, drinks, and games quickly spirals into a nightmare. For lurking in the shadows is the ghost bride with a black smile and a hungry heart.

And she gets lonely down there in the dirt.

Review: Cat and her friends arrive at an abandoned old mansion to spend a spooky weekend in celebration of one couple's upcoming wedding. Except it's the ghostly bride of the manor that wants to be married, but if she can't have her love, then she'll take a sacrifice. No one is leaving until she gets what she wants.

This is a atmospheric short horror novella with the focus on its beautiful prose ripe with wonder and terror. The cast of characters have many issues with one another and are constantly in strife. None of them are likable, and are, in fact, terribly annoying, but this isn't a story based on characterization. That threw off my enjoyment of it as I am a writer and reader who loves excellent characterization. It's about fear, the ancient mansion, its terrifying history, the ghost, and the twist, making the reader wonder just how exactly it will all go down. The story itself has no twist, but again, it's about how it's told and the visuals it produces. Khaw does that very well, but likable characters would help make a good story a fantastic one.
