Blurb: The world was destroyed by angry gods at the end of the 22nd century, but humanity survived. Now it's AL 1040 and the world is a very different place…
Abertha Keir, high level witch of the Guild, and her companion, the ever-snarky Fer-Doirich, have been assigned the task of finding out what lurks beneath the waters of the San Francisco Ruins near Oakland. Yet, they soon discover that not everything is as it seems. An even bigger puzzle begins to unfold and it pushes Abertha to use skills that she keeps under wraps. What could be lurking within the ruins and just how far will Abertha have to go to stop it?
Review: As a high level witch of the Guild, Abertha Keir is sent on assignment after assignment, never settling in a place to call home. She's sent to investigate reports of increased monster activity by the San Francisco Ruins, but she discovers a plot that is far more deadly than just a few more monsters coming out of the sea. Abertha has powers she keeps secret, but there may be no other way to defeat the evil than to use them. Which, in the end, could mean the death of her even if she does win.
This is the first book of the marvelous urban fantasy series, the Donn's Chosen. This was a random pick for me, and I'm so happy that I discovered it. This is a fantasy set on post-apocalyptic Earth, after angry gods destroyed it at the end of the 22nd century. It's about a thousand years since that happened and the world is immensely different, but there are still some bits that are like the old times. There are still trains, but people fly in airships. Most of the population are still regular humans, but those born with magic are snatched up by the Guild or one of the several temples. Great bits of history and so many possibilities for this world. I thoroughly enjoyed the world building, and we're only on the west coast of the US in this book. There's still a whole new world to explore.
Abertha is a hardened soul, but a good witch. She travels with her companion, Fer-Doirich, who is a druid from long ago. She doesn't share much of feelings about things, but focuses on the mission at hand. Fer-Doirich is difficult to like to at first, but just as he did with Abertha, he grows on you. It's not a romantic situation, if you're wondering. Abertha doesn't get attached to anything or anyone, but having already the second book, she does begin to open up and you see more of her emotions. Fantastic action and a wonderful blend of old myths with a post-apocalyptic world.
