Review of The Recruit

Blurb: Join the journey of Charming, and how she became part of the Rifters in this captivating tale.

Review: Prodigy and lover of underwater dinosaurs, Charming Moon Knight is trying to find her dream job. When it seems hopeless, she receives a strange letter from Settler, Oregon, and an invitation to take a position at their paleo institute. It seems too good to be true, but Charming isn't going to let a little mystery and weird townies chase her away. Though maybe she should, because what's coming from the Rift could kill not only her, but everyone in Settler.

This novella is a prequel to the awesome speculative fiction series, The Rifters. It's my favorite series from Mary Pax, and I loved getting a peek into Charming's life and how she came to Settler before her sister, Daelin's story starts. Just know this tale is available only to subscribers to the author's newsletter.

Charming and her siblings have lived a rough life, and the three of them have always been close. When Charming receives the job offer in Settler, she's only worried about missing her brother and sister. I love the dynamic between the three of them and the genuine love they have for one another. They're unique characters, and when Charming gets to Settler, we're introduced to a diverse and odd cast who I adore. There isn't a single character who I wouldn't want a whole series about.

You don't need to have read The Rifters to enjoy this prequel. This is a great introduction to the weirdness in Settler. Not just odd folks, but the rift, the monsters, and the mystery of it all. Plus a ton of dinosaur talk and silly puns! It's a well-crafted story that doesn't take itself too seriously.

You can find M. Pax on her site and get the book by subscribing to her newsletter here.
