Review of Time-Marked Warlock (The Chronos Chronicles #1)

Blurb: Adair Finch is the most powerful warlock in the world, and one of the best private investigators for hire.

He has dealt with corporate vampires, murderous werewolves, and even fae royalty. Everything was perfect until he lost one case—the case where he also lost his brother.

So Finch retired. From magic. From PI work. From everything.

Bree Blackstone, a twelve-year-old witch, doesn’t know or care about any of that except Finch’s reputation. In the middle of the night, she bangs on Finch’s door. Her mother has been murdered, and now the assassin is after Bree as well.

Reluctantly, Finch agrees to help, only to discover something sinister has been brewing in town while he ignored the world… He’ll need to dust off all his old skills and magic before it’s too late.

Review: Private Investigator Adair Finch has never recovered from the lose of his brother. Even though he's one of the most powerful warlocks in the world, he has hidden away for over a decade until a witchling named Bree Blackstone knocks on his door and claims her mother has been murdered. Reluctantly Adair agrees to help the girl find the assassin, but the case unravels with so many layers, it may be too much even for Adair.

This is the first book in the excellently written urban fantasy series, The Chronos Chronicles, and what a fantastic start to the series! Adair is a warlock with the power to rewind time, but only to the minute he marked. This allows him to live the same day over and over to solve crimes. It's a bit like the movie, Groundhog Day. It in no way makes the story repetitive. He's the only warlock with a pact with Chronos in the world, and it is a great power. He also has some huge fire powers from another pact which he uses sparingly for good reasons.

As Adair peels back the layers of what's going on, there's always something more to do and it's so much bigger than just the murder of one witch. It's a complicated case, and I ate up every bit. I loved the world building and the different sorts of magic in the world. The differences between warlocks and witches are explained, and we get peeks into how most of them use magic. I was on the edge of my seat and I laughed out loud several times. Adair is a hard edged hero but with a huge heart that Bree helps brings forth. I particularly loved Kull the mischief spirit. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
