Review of The Cure

Since this is the first official week of my new blog, I'm celebrating by putting up two reviews!

Also, I'm so excited for Patricia Josephine and her newest release, The Cure, I couldn't wait!

Blurb: Every human in the world becomes a zombie when they die. But Erin refuses to accept the world as it is now. She’s heard about a cure locked away in a lab in Upper Michigan, and she plans on retrieving it. To do so, she needs a zombie. Not just any zombie, though.

Zee is Erin’s link to the lab. His connection to the living world is her bargaining chip. But only if she can teach him to control his mindless impulses.

Can a zombie be trained? Or will Erin be Zee’s next meal and become a zombie herself? The fate of humanity rests in her hands.

My review: A virus has infected everyone in the world so that when they die, they become a zombie. Erin knows where there is a cure. Her plan includes training a certain zombie and using him to get her into the lab. Yet can a zombie learn to control his hunger or will Erin become one herself?

This is a fantastic zombie tale which gives us layers to the zombies themselves. They aren't just mindless undead wanting to eat brains. There's more there, and this story whips up a bunch of emotions in thinking that. Erin is doing what she has to do, but it doesn't mean she isn't struggling with it. If she can get the cure, if she can save humanity, is it worth it? Great characterization. I also liked seeing what the world might be like after a zombie apocalypse. Empty streets, lack of supplies, survivors gathering to barter and trying to keep living on. Well-written, emotional, and suspenseful. Highly recommended for speculative fiction fans.

Speaking of empty streets and the Upper Michigan setting of this tale, I was lucky to get a chance to meet Patricia last year and tour downtown Sault Ste Marie (The Soo) with her. This was a bonus in pulling me right into the setting and being able to picture places in my mind. Of course, there were no zombies, but we did meet Bigfoot!

You can find Patricia on her website and buy The Cure from your favorite retailer.
